The History of Physical Dolls and Who’s Making Them Now

Have you ever wondered where solid sex dolls come from? It’s certainly a story worth uncovering.

Over the course of three or four centuries, solid dolls have gone from starting out as leather puppets to life-like robots. The technology behind it shows no signs of slowing down in the long run as more and more lifelike dolls are introduced. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and open up the untold story.

The History of Physical Dolls

One of the earliest records of solid dolls is from the 17th century, when Dutch sailors used hand-sewn leather puppets to “relieve boredom” during their voyages, bringing them to Japan and trading them with local sailors.

This was a natural progression from the loneliness that seafarers felt on long voyages.

Fast-forward a few centuries to the 1930s, and author Anthony Ferguson argues that it was around this time that German surrealist artist Hans Bellmer invented the more modern solid doll.

In his 2010 book A Brief History of Solid Dolls, he writes, “The only difference between the mystical, erotic models created by Belmer in the 1930s and the functional solid dolls was that they lacked the necessary entrance.”

And that missing piece came with the invention of the inflatable doll at the end of World War II.

However, if one listens to the wild stories, many may believe that they were invented by Hitler.

There are rumors that he instituted this policy to prevent Germans from having sex with non-Aryan women, while others say that he instituted it to prevent the spread of disease in the Nazi army. However, there is no evidence that these claims have any substance.

Physical sex dolls first appeared in public-facing magazines in 1968, when it became legal to sell such items through the post office.

Over time, these dolls became more and more realistic, and new silicone and TPE materials paved the way for the complete elimination of the need for humans. In the 21st century, talking companion robots are appearing one by one, putting “e-emotions” on the map.

Who makes physical dolls?

Manufacturers of solid dolls are all over the world, of which China is the world’s largest producer of adult products, with production accounting for 60%-80% of the total global market, with a market size of 113.4 billion dollars, and is also the largest exporter of solid dolls.

There are more than 2,000 manufacturers of solid dolls in China.

Who is buying these physical dolls?

In the interviews about it we can learn from the employees that most buyers are “just people who are fascinated by people”.

Partners and singles buy physical dolls as a way of exploring life because it is not emotional or deceptive.

There are lonely men who don’t necessarily want to date. There are disabled people for whom physical dolls are convenient and unbiased companions. And then there are like couples who want to add another dimension to their love life without the extra emotional burden.

More and more people are simply finding a physical doll to be a better fit for their lifestyle.

At the same time, there have been reports of people saying they are in love with their dolls. It has been suggested that in the future, physical dolls could be used to keep lonely elderly people company if they have no one to keep them company.
